Famous Spies
Benedict Arnold-Benedict Arnold played a very important role in the British army. He was an American soldier, but also a spy for the British. Benedict Arnold was regarded as a hero in the Battle of Saratoga, but he felt that he didn't get the recognition for what he did. In response, George Washington put Arnold in charge of West Point, but Arnold was convinced to purposely give over the fort to the British. His plan was foiled by the Patriots, but he ended up escaping the punishments.
Nathan Hale-“I only regret, that I have but one life to lose for my country.” This quote was spoken by Nathan Hale, a famous American Revolution spy. Hale was born in Coventry, Connecticut, 1755, but died a young age at only 21 years old. He was a spy for the Continental Army. In 1776, he was disguised as a Dutch school teacher to retrieve British military information, but he was caught and hanged.
John Andre- This Loyalist spy, John Andre, was arrrested for treason in 1780 for being in American lines with a fake diguise and name. He had to journey through Patriot territory with a letter for Benedict Arnold, so instead of wearing his British uniform, he wore an American uniform. He met with Americans dressed as Britissh soldiers, then they searched Andre and found the papers for Benedict Arnold
